TURKMENISTAN HONORS THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE AND MOVES FORWARD TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

On the 20th of March 2021, a grand tree planting campaign took place in Turkmenistan initiated by the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on the threshold of the national Novruz holiday and in honor of the 30th anniversary of Independence of Turkmenistan.

The event on planting the trees was attended by the President of Turkmenistan, heads and representatives of Mejlis (Parliament), Members of the Government, leadership of the ministries and departments of the country, as well as the residents of Turkmenistan.

As known, the current year proclaimed by the corresponding Resolution of the UN General Assembly as the International Year of Peace and Trust is observed in Turkmenistan under the slogan “Turkmenistan – the Homeland of Peace and Trust”.

According to the programme adopted in the country on holding various events of political, economic and cultural-humanitarian nature in this landmark year, special meetings, forums, contests, exhibitions are organized in the country and abroad, both in face-to-face, as well as in the virtual format.  

Today’s tree planting campaign is held in accordance with the National Strategy of Turkmenistan on Climate change and with the aim of increasing the forest zones in the country. This event is consonant with the goals of the ecological diplomacy of Turkmenistan and aimed at the fulfillment of the Goal 15 of the SDGs – “Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss”.
